It started with love in 2006. Some people were shocked to see the pictures from one of the pounds, where animals were not kept properly. Those people came to take a few puppies and adult animals from that ugly place and find them new homes.
It continued with love. Soon the first website in Lithuania dedicated to adoptable animals was opened at http://www.pifas.lt. The goal was to save animals from cruelty at animal pounds in our country - to prevent them from being taken into those "death homes", to promote them and to find loving homes. It was the first and the only volunteer movement to help stray animals in Lithuania, and at the beginning of 2008 it evolved to a non-profit public organization "Pifas.lt".
In the summer of the same year, "Pifas.lt" was supported by the public and could afford to buy a mobile house. It was called "SOS animals hut" and now stray animals are kept there. It is small, it is not perfect, it is enough for just about 30 animals. Nevertheless our
volunteers are able to help hundreds of animals in this no-kill shelter. In one year we were able to take care of 700 animals and to find them new owners. All this would be a mission impossible without our love to these helpless creatures.
In 2009, "Pifas.lt" changed it's name to "SOS gyvūnai" ("SOS animals") and launched a project called
"SOS animals shelter". We expect to build new facilities for care of stray animals and to raise importance of our organization and it's results in Lithuania.
We are working on our English version of the website because we want to welcome everyone from everywhere who is interested in adopting a pet, to feel the pulse of shelter life, daily extreme and to read lots of stories about rescue of stray animals.
