SOS animal shelter

Dear "SOS animals" readers and friends,

Only because of you "SOS animals" blogs are constantly full of stories about the rescued homeless animals. Last summer, when we received our first 2% from PIT support, we purchased the mobile house and established a small shelter, called “SOS animal hut”. Most of the heroes from our stories have been housed in this home. Many of them are already enjoying the warmth and love in their new homes, and others are only waiting for it…

We are very happy to receive such a huge approval of our idea – to shelter disadvantaged animals and look for their new owners for an unlimited amount of time, without any threat to put to sleep the “unmarketable” ones. The SOS animal hut became a fond place, where people who like animals can come and help – we found out that almost all of their dream since childhood has been… to establish their own animal shelter.

Today we would like to invite everyone, united by this dream, to make it come true together. The success and experience of the SOS animal hut encouraged us to undertake a serious project – to build a new SOS animal shelter meeting all the appropriate standards and to proceed with the work we have started to even bigger extent and better conditions for animal keeping. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to purchase land for we have no sufficient financial resource, only the support of people. But there is a solution – a portable house that does not require a building permit and can be built anywhere and moved anytime. Although the construction will require tremendous financial resources, we believe that together with you we will overcome this challenge. All funds, donated this year to the public enterprise “SOS animals” from the 2% from PIT declaration, as well as funds, donated by natural and legal persons to the bank account for shelter construction will be used for these construction works. Our common dream may become reality if we take the trouble to attract as many people as possible who would support this project financially.

PublicEnglishPlan.jpgWhat will be the difference between the SOS animal shelter and the SOS animal hut?

Currently we are able to shelter only a small amount of animals in our “SOS animals” hut – around 15-20 cats and several dogs, but we are not able to safeguard the requirements for animal shelters because of its limited area: it is practically impossible to keep adoptable animals separated from quarantined ones, properly protect them from infectious diseases.

After building the “SOS animals” shelter, the current hut will be maintained as adoptable cats’ premises. Only healthy cats that have been quarantined for 10 days will live there. It will also serve as a building for visitors and volunteers. Meanwhile most animals will be kept in the new “SOS animals” shelter.

Vision of the shelter

When designing the new shelter, the Veterinary requirements for animal shelters, approved by State Food and Veterinary Service, veterinarian’s Jakovas Sengautas recommendations, experience from foreign countries, projects and recommendations of existing shelters and construction companies that have built shelters will be consulted.

“SOS animals” new shelter will be temporarily constructed next to “SOS animal” hut – Zalgirio st., Vilnius. If for any reason our rent contract is discontinued we will be able to move the shelter to another location! The space of the planned shelter building is 100 sq. m. but as soon as we have enough money we will be able to expand it easily.

Our initial animal housing availability will be as follows:

  • 6 medium and big dogs
  • 12 small dogs
  • 42 cats

CatCondos.jpg“SOS animals” shelter will have an animal intake room where they will be examined, also separate rooms for sick, recovering and newly arrived (healthy) cats as well as rooms for adoptable, sick and newly arrived (healthy) dogs. Animals suspected of having rabies will be kept in an isolated room. In the yard we will have aviaries for dogs, walking court, and the mobile “SOS animals” hut.

We will pay special attention to specialist recommendations because of proper materials for floor covering, sound isolation and natural lighting, so that the premises would cause as little stress as possible to our housed animals, so that the conditions would be comfortable for volunteers taking care of them, and as pleasant for visitors as possible. There will also be installed an effective ventilation and heating system which will provide clean and fresh air.

SOS animal shelter is a place where all animals will be kept until new owners will be found for them (except in cases of critical health conditions). We would like to stress that we do not act under the auspices of state institutions, thus we will not be able to accept ALL animals, about which we will only receive announcements. The shelter will be designed for a certain number of animals which will be provided with the area, indicated in the requirements for shelter homes. Besides, we are against putting animals to sleep, thus we will have limited possibility to accept aggressive animals.

Design and construction work

A modern animal shelter is a building which has to be built according to specific matters related to animal keeping: acoustics (so that there is as little noise as possible), water drainage system (considerable amount of fur and dirt), ventilation (so that the smell of animals would not reach other premises), etc. We have consulted foreign specialists regarding mentioned systems and chosen the construction company according to price and construction type.
